During this live stream, I taught this lick in 6 parts. You'll see below that each part is circled with a different color. I break down each part using scale degrees and concepts that help me wrap my brain around it.
Picture

Red

  • Start on 8, Chromatic Enclosure (above, below) of the 4

Green

  • (Descending then Ascending) Dominant Bebop Scale starting on  scale degree 4

Orange

  • Enclosure (diatonic below, chromatic above) of the b7, chromatic passing tone to b6

Blue

  • Melodic minor scale starting on the b6, land on scale degree 12 (same as 5 up the octave)

Yellow

  • Descend Chromatically from 12 (5) to 10 (b3) [major 3rd apart] ;
  • Enclosure (chromatic below, diatonic above) of the 8

Purple

  • Diatonic Enclosure of the b6, triplet starting on b6 (middle note b7)
  • 5-2-1-b3
Leave a comment below if you have any questions about the analysis or, if you see concepts in a different way. Enjoy!

Hello Aaron, thank you for the classes, I enjoy them. I ve been trying to follow you by ear, but at this lick I could hardly memorize the tune. I wonder why the score is not according the b trumpet tune. You played starting from D, not C.
